Animal Protection

The Department of Animal Protection is comprised of two branches, enforcement and sheltering.  Animal Protection Officers enforce all State and County animal welfare ordinances.  Officers provide for the safety and welfare of residents as it pertains to the control of domestic animals.  The department also operates a shelter to care for stray animals and attempt to reunite them with an owner.  Shelter staff find homes for all adoptable animals through citizen adoptions along with coordinating transfers to animal rescue organizations.

Goochland County’s New Animal Protection Facility Regroups

The new Goochland County Animal Protection and Adoption Center, one of the County’s most exciting new projects and partnerships with Goochland Pet Lovers, has been temporarily delayed.

This new state of the art facility built with county funds and contributions raised from our community has been delayed after careful evaluation and consideration of the conditions related to its construction and lack of progress by the General Contractor on the project. Due to the importance of this project to our community and the continued and limited action by the General Contractor, the County has intervened and terminated the contract of the project’s general contractor, BFE Construction, Inc. At this time, the construction site has been fenced off, with only Goochland County staff or those with explicit permission allowed to enter.

It is the County’s obligation and commitment to build a shelter that is well constructed and that will serve the community for many years to come. The County is steadfastly pursuing appropriate actions under the performance bond for the project in order to push the project to completion in a timely and workmanlike manner. As more information becomes available related to the process and timeframes for construction, we will be sure to share that information expeditiously.

We remain grateful for your gracious and ongoing support and our partnership with Goochland Pet Lovers. We share the joint commitment to creating the shelter and caring environment our residents and pets deserve.

Shelter operations will continue at the Central High Complex location until the new shelter is completed. We have many great pets up for adoption at our interim shelter and invite the entire community to come visit, adopt, and join us all in becoming Pet Lovers!
